What’s Special About This Concert:
- This concert features two rarely heard British composers, Ethel Smyth and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Ethel Smyth joined the women’s suffrage movement, composing March of the Women as an anthem for the movement. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was referred to as the “African Mahler” because of the success he achieved, paired with his symphonic writing.
- Austrian composer, Franz Joseph Haydn, composed his 104th symphony, titled the “London Symphony” for a trip to the symphony’s namesake city.
- It can’t be the British Invasion without music from the band that started it all, The Beatles.
